Background Information
The Abominable Snowman is a legendary ape-like beast said to inhabit the snowy mountains of the Himalayas, in the region of Nepal and Tibet. The beast has many names. Local Tibetan legends talk of distinct varieties, named Yeh-teh, Meh-teh and Dzu-teh; Yeti has gone on to become a popular name for the beast in western culture. Other Tibetan names include Mi-Go and Mirka, both of which translate as 'wild man,' and Kang-Mi, which translates as 'snowman.' The most common Nepalese name for the creature is Ban-manche, which means 'forest man.'
The popular western term Abominable Snowman was coined in 1921, by members of an Alpine Club expedition to the Himalayas. Numerous sightings of the Snowman have been reported over the years, particularly since European explorers began researching the Himalayan region in the 19th century. Evidence for the creature ranges from huge human-like footprints to close sightings of the beast. Even remains of the creature are purported to exist, including a supposed Yeti scalp kept in a Buddhist monastery, and the Pangboche hand, said to be the preserved hand of one of the beasts. Such artefacts have been dismissed as either hoaxes or misidentified primate remains by experts. Equally, sightings of the creature have been attributed to local animals such as the Himalayan Brown Bear, which the locals call Dzu-Teh - one of the names for the Snowman itself. Other theories include the possibility that the Yeti is a surviving example of the prehistoric primate Gigantopithecus.
Similar legends around the world include the yeren or wildman of China, the Bigfoot or sasquatch of Pacific North America, and the yowie of Australia.
