Official biography[]

From Greece, Cerberus is the ultimate guard dog. He stands fearlessly at the gates of the Underworld to greet the evil souls ferried in by Charon. This monster dog has three ugly heads and a dragon's tail and will eat anyone trying to escape.

Origin[]

In Greek mythology, Cerberus is one of the offspring of Typhon and Echidna. He is a three-headed hound that guards the entrance of the underworld and keeps people from going in or out. Some versions claim that Cerberus has a mane of vipers around each neck and a large viper for his tail. Despite his vicious appearance, Cerberus rarely attacks living souls and merely bars the way to the underworld.

Two Greek heroes have been known to best Cerberus. The first being Hercules. As the last of his twelve labors, Hercules was to capture Cerberus and bring him into the world of the living with his bare hands. Using his superhuman strength, Hercules completed the task and was relieved of the shame of his crimes.

The second hero to best Cerberus was Orpheus. When Orpheus ventured into the underworld to rescue the soul of his lover Eurydice, he got past Cerberus by lulling him to sleep with his lyre.
