The cockatrice appears as a normal enemy in Stage 5, area 1. It simply moves back and forth, firing a beam at a 45 degree angle should the player be close enough to the line of fire.
Although the manual mentions that the cockatrice springs, this is incorrect. It only makes a simple horizontal flight.
