Spectre, now renamed as Grim Reaper, was a monster given a makeover for the 2006 line. He is in the class "The Dead" and is monster #34. This time he wears a tattered purple cloak with a rotting skull and carries a blood-stained scythe. His background photo is set in some sort of snowy dark graveyard.

Official Card Biography[]

The Grim Reaper is death that appears in the shape of a skeleton covered in a dark cloak. He walks through the earth, cutting off people's lives as though he were harvesting grain with the blood-stained scythe he carries to warn people of his terrible arrival.

Release[]

In the UK, Grim Reaper was only sold with the Monster Battle Showdown which came bundled with Mummy.

Origin[]

The Spectre is a parody of the Grim Reaper, a common personification of death that originated in 16th century Europe. According to legend, the Reaper doesn't kill people; it just shows up when someone's time on Earth has come to an end. The figure stands silently in front of the victim while holding a giant scythe. Like a farmer who harvests his crops, the Reaper uses its scythe to sever the spirit from a human body, which it then carries to the afterlife.

Most stories tell of the Reaper carrying an hourglass, accompanied by a crow or raven. The birds are universal symbols for the coming of death, and the hourglass shows a victim that his or her time is up. Some legends tell of the Grim Reaper showing itself to evildoers, not to take them away, but to warn them to act better. The Reaper appears and taps its hourglass, showing that time is ticking, and there still might be enough time left to save their souls.
